Treatment for Chronic Pain and Migraines

Chronic pain is a problem affecting millions of Americans. It can come from accidents, work related job injuries, disease or heredity. It is defined as pain that endures for more than six months. For many, pain medication helps, but living with chronic pain is prone to wear a person down psychologically and emotionally. Sometimes all that can be done is to teach the individual to live with the pain by teaching them coping skills.

TMJ/TMD and migraine headaches are two disorders that have responded well to biofeedback and neurofeedback. Relaxation training, diaphragmatic breathing and self hypnosis are also proven to be effective. Depression and anxiety are common reactions to living with chronic pain and are known to increase the amount of pain perceived by the patient; pain is a subjective experience that is worsened by depression and anxiety.
